Who we are

BCRCF

Nepal’s conservation journey is one of the world’s great success stories. In just five decades, our forests have come back to life. Tigers, rhinos, and elephants — once on the brink — now roam freely again. By 2024, Bardiya became home to Nepal’s largest elephant population — more than 120 individuals — and 125 tigers, up from just 18 in 2010. These are milestones worth celebrating.

But behind this ecological success lies a human story — one of loss, displacement, and resilience.

It is time to change this. The Burhan Community Regeneration and Conservation Foundation (BCRCF) is a grassroots movement from Bardiya, Nepal, dedicated to restoring harmony between people and nature. Founded by local leaders, cultural advocates, and conservationists, we work to give communities agency over conservation. Through our Initiative for Agency of Community over Conservation (IACC), we empower Indigenous and local groups to lead conflict response, monitor wildlife, and design coexistence solutions that protect both lives and landscapes.

Ban Pahura

merochittra-02119

Ban Pahura is a dynamic, youth-led, gender-inclusive Community Conservation Crisis Group (CCCG) comprising six permanent and twelve volunteer members from Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs), primarily from the Tharu community.

As custodians of both culture and ecology, Ban Pahura leads community-driven regeneration across ecological, social, and economic dimensions. Their core work includes rapid response during conservation crises, wildlife rescues, driving women- and youth-led microenterprises, and advancing community awareness and advocacy for coexistence and regenerative living.

We envision thriving ecosystems and resilient communities where Indigenous peoples lead conservation efforts, continuing their timeless harmony with the land.
